Now I’m working on THE GINGER MAN, a play by J.P. Donleavy. I really feel like we have a great team and a wonderfully supporting director. The one thing that is different than from THE COUNTRY WIFE is I finally have a budget! I’m also having one of my dresses get custom built, so I’m already exercising my ability to communicate with my cutter/fitter. My fittings are going rather well, and this is going to be a great show. THE GINGER MAN is based in Post War Dublin, 1947, so the costumes need to look worn, and have the silhouette of the early 40′s or late 30′s since they wouldn’t be up on the current fashions.

I’m also in the Bobby Moresco class where we get to team up with other students in the film department to create 3 minute short films. We’re teams of directors, producers, writers, DP’s, Costume Designers, and Production Designers. My team is working on the short BOUND TO KILL, which is a nod to the film noir style and features three of our MFA actors. We shoot next week, so we’re currently shopping this week.

As for this month, I’m getting ready to design my first show at my graduate school, UCLA. It’s called THE COUNTRY WIFE, and although I don’t have a budget to build costumes, I do have access to the stock in the costume shop and can alter costumes. Initially, this show was going to have “rehearsal conditions”; meaning that the actors were to wear all black and perform in “workshop” conditions. However, I think this will be an excellent challenge for me, because the stock of Baroque costumes won’t create a fully cohesive look on stage. So instead of fully keeping it Baroque, I will have to stretch the period to include a little of before and after and include items that won’t have anything to do with the period, but still evoke the period. So it’s going to be tricky, and it’s really going to take knowing the stock very well  to create a interesting, cohesive look for the show.

THE COUNTRY WIFE will have a performance at The William Andrews Clark Memorial Library in Los Angeles. The featured image is of the lovely drawing room, the room that it will be performed in.
